Drive – Pick up from your stay in Moshi then drive to Materuni village.
Duration – 30 minutes
Materuni Village is nestled in the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, just 30 minutes from Moshi. Home to the Chagga tribe, the village offers everything from breath-taking scenery, beautiful fauna and flora and an insight into the local culture and traditions.
These innovative and long standing tribes produce a wealth of crops ranging from bananas, yams, sugar, maize and beans.
However, Arabica coffee is the Chaggas primary cash crop and has been since colonial times. Once at Materuni village you will be given a tour of a family run Kahawa Shamba (coffee farm), where you will learn about the intricacies of growing the coffee, picking the coffee beans, removing the beans’ cover, roasting the beans, crushing them and finally tasting your very own cup of delicious coffee.
Duration – 2 hours
We will then take a short hike to the waterfalls through the beautiful rainforest, over small streams leading to local irrigation systems and, if it’s a clear day, have views of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The hike will give you the chance to speak with the locals and opportunities to learn about the infrastructures of local housing.
The waterfalls are an impressive 150m high, originating from Kilimanjaro’s glaciers, and is surrounded by awesome views and birdlife. Here, you can take a refreshing dip in the cool water and enjoy a picnic lunch.
